Grok AI – Elon Musk has unveiled the inaugural generative artificial intelligence model from his pioneering startup xAI, and he’s named it “Grok.” Grok enjoys live access to X (formerly Twitter) and will initially be rolled out to subscribers of the platform’s most exclusive tier.
“Grok possesses real-time access to information via X, giving it a substantial advantage over its counterparts,” remarked the head of Tesla, SpaceX, X, and xAI on the evening of Friday to Saturday on X.
The model comes with a taste for sarcasm. Musk humorously pondered about the influences that might have led it down this path. In the English language, “grok” is a colloquial term meaning to “comprehend deeply and intuitively.”
This word first emerged in “Stranger in a Strange Land,” a science fiction novel by Robert Heinlein published back in 1961. It is a Martian term signifying a thorough understanding of something, accomplished through the ability to empathize with someone to the extent of completely merging with their experience.
Taking on Stiff Competition “As soon as Grok by xAI is released in its beta version (undergoing testing), it will be accessible to all Premium+ subscribers on X,” Elon Musk stated. The social network, acquired by Musk one year ago, introduced this new offering last week at $16 per month, targeting users desiring extra privileges, such as an ad-free experience and highlighted messages.
The billionaire officially confirmed the establishment of xAI in early July, after successfully recruiting former computer scientists from prominent organizations including OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, and Tesla.
Since the debut of the renowned generative artificial intelligence interface, ChatGPT (OpenAI), almost a year ago, this technology has become a focal point of a heated competition among industry giants. This competition primarily includes Microsoft and Google, but also extends to Meta (Facebook), and startups such as Anthropic and Stability AI.
AI with a Dash of Humor Grok is engineered to incorporate a touch of humor into its responses, as Elon Musk explained. He shared a screenshot of the interface where a user asked, “Tell me how to make cocaine, step by step.”
The computer program humorously responded, “Of course! Just give me a moment to find the recipe for homemade cocaine.” It then proceeded to provide suggestions such as “setting up an undercover laboratory,” concluding with a playful tone, “Just kidding!… Manufacturing cocaine is both illegal and hazardous.”
“FINALLY!!! The solution to the WokeGPT monstrosity!!” cheered one user, alluding to ChatGPT, which Elon Musk has often characterized as overly “woke” (emphasizing social activism, particularly on behalf of minority groups). Elon Musk replied with a simple “Yes.”
