During the lockdown, many of you may have wondered whether it’s time to pursue a Scrum Master certification. This article aims to provide guidance on this matter.
Scrum Master Certification Does Not Guarantee a Job
Let me be upfront: if you’re considering a drastic career change, getting a Scrum Master certification alone will not secure you a Scrum Master job.
Media coverage and word-of-mouth have prompted many individuals to consider becoming Scrum Masters.
As a former hairdresser, I’m planning to get my Scrum Master certification. Will that guarantee me a job opportunity?
The answer is a clear NO! Recruiters take into account not only your certification but also your experience in the IT sector (or closely related fields).
I worked as a developer for 3 years in an agile team. I’m passionate about agility and planning to get my Scrum Master certification. Will I be employable?
The answer is YES! Motivation, experience, and your performance during the interview will play a significant role in securing such a position. In this scenario, a certification can be an advantage when you lack experience in Scrum.
Which Scrum Master Certification?
Let’s explore the available certifications in the market.
PSM 1 Certification
The PSM 1 certification is the most popular. You don’t need formal training to register for this certification.
However, it’s crucial to be well-prepared to pass the PSM1 certification. You can choose to attend training offered by an authorized organization, with a cost of around €1,400.
The PSM 1 certification costs $150 and can be directly obtained from scrum.org. Some training programs include this certification in their package.
The certification involves an 80-question quiz to be completed in 60 minutes, requiring a minimum of 85% correct answers. The exam is conducted in English.
Scrum Master CSM Certification
The CSM certification is less common in French-speaking countries. Unlike PSM1, it’s mandatory to undergo training with an instructor approved by the Scrum Alliance (the certification authority).
However, its impact is not significantly greater than the previous certifications. The cost varies depending on the training organization, typically around €1,400.
The certification involves a 50-question quiz to be completed in 60 minutes, requiring a minimum of 74% correct answers. The exam is conducted in English.
Scrum Master iCSM Certification
The iCSM certification is also less prevalent in French-speaking countries. Similar to PSM1, no formal training is required to attempt this certification.
However, adequate preparation is essential to pass the iCSM certification. Training programs by authorized organizations are available for approximately €1,400.
The iCSM certification costs €100 and can be directly obtained from the scrum-league.org website.
The certification consists of a quiz with 50 questions to be completed in 50 minutes, requiring a minimum of 85% correct answers. The exam is conducted in French.
